How to paint bathroom tiles with a stencil

Guys, I just finished an intense project, and I am about to give you my honest opinion. All over Pinterest, I have seen people painting their tile floors.

Therefore, I thought this would be a good idea.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the results. My bathroom is gorgeous, and I am so happy with the new vibe. However, I had to sell my soul to get there.

A few tips before I get to the nitty, gritty of this project:

  1. If you can just buy tiles with a design already, do that.
  2. Be prepared to not use this bathroom for an extended period of time.
  3. Try to pick a stencil that is not as complicated as mine.
  4. Be prepared to be the touch-up queen

Basically, this project is not for the faint of heart.

Here is what you will need:

Epoxy paint (one color for your tile, a second for your stencil)

Polyurethane sealant

Roller

Stamping brush

Stamping detail brush

Brush for sealant

Sandpaper

Heavy-duty cleaner/degreaser

Painter’s tape

Steps:

Clean your bathroom floor thoroughly

Line edges of floor with painter’s tape

Paint floor with your base color (I used black). Let it dry for over 5 hours. I used three coats.

After your are done with your base color, allow to dry for an entire day.

Place stencil on tile and stamp brush with second color (I used white). Go over stencil at least two times to get a solid color.

TIP: You are going to want to use a light layer to prevent bleeding on the stencil. I stamped a light layer, allowed the stencil to sit for 5 minutes, and then I added a second layer.

Use a smaller stamping brush to touch up messes.

Allow design to dry for one day.

Apply polyurethane with a regular brush. Allow layer to completely dry before adding another coat.

Let floor dry for two days before regular use!
